In 2003, 42 members of Good Shepherd made a commitment to support two missionaries, Rev. Chuck Groth and his wife Jeanette. In addition to this financial commitment Good Shepherd as a congregation give very important weekly prayer support. In addition to our prayers, Good Shepherd has also provided other support. For example, one Christmas, through the Angel Tree, Good Shepherd made it possible for 36 youngsters to attend school in Hemang, Ghana and for 25 desks to be purchased for the school. And the Sunday School children raised thousands of dollars towards a new school building in Ghana.

We particularly look forward to occasional visits from the Groth’s.

When we started supporting them, Rev. Charles and Jeanette Groth were called to serve God in Ghana, West Africa where Charles taught student clergy in the seminary of the LCMS partner church body, the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Ghana (ELCG), in Accra, the capital city of Ghana. Jeanette worked with ELCG schools, training writers and assisting with Curriculum development.

In 2006 the Groth's moved to Battambang, Cambodia, where they joined the mission team preaching to the predominately Buddhist population there. Chuck servers as pastor/mentor to a dozen pastors-in-training. Jeanette works with the pastors, Sunday school teachers and other church leaders helping them to improve their teaching skills.

Charles was born and raised in Chicago suburbs. He has served parishes in Richton Park, Ill., Crown Point, Ind., and Lexington, Ky. He and Jeanette met at Concordia College, Ann Arbor, Mich., in 1968. They were married on Dec. 19, 1970, and now have three grown children: Kristyn, Jason and Kara. Charles enjoys woodworking, amateur radio (KC4JOX and 9G5CG) and electronic communications.

Jeanette has a doctorate in curriculum and instruction. She taught in Lutheran schools in Bloomington, Homewood and Springfield, Ill., and taught social studies in the Fayette County, Ky., school system. She likes to travel and has led school groups to Japan and the British Isles. Jeanette has enjoyed writing books and educational materials for Concordia Publishing, House for 25 years. She loves to play the piano.

Charles and Jeanette would like prayers for their family while they are separated from them. Pray that God will continue to keep them focused on sharing Jesus as they work in schools and training pastors. May the Spirit Open hearts as they share the love of Christ Jesus with many in Cambodia.
